BURN PERMITS

Outdoor burning is permitted in these municipalities only if specific regulations and restrictions are met. Residents must review their local ordinances to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and safety guidelines.
Important Considerations Before You Burn
  • Prohibited Burning: Small businesses, commercial enterprises, and industries are not permitted to use burn barrels or conduct any form of open burning.
  • Restricted Materials: It is illegal to burn building materials, treated or painted wood, furniture, plastic, rubber, garbage, asphalt, or other toxic substances.
Burn Restrictions & Fire Department AuthorityThe Fire Chief or other designated fire department officials may restrict outdoor burning at any time due to dangerous atmospheric conditions such as:
  • High winds
  • Extended dry periods
  • Local burn bans issued by the Wisconsin DNR
Always check this website or contact the Marshall Fire Department before conducting any outdoor burning.
Precautions for Controlled BurnsTo safely conduct a controlled burn, follow these precautions:
  1. Obtain Permission: Before burning, you must speak directly with a designated fire department representative (details below). Voicemails, emails, or text messages are not accepted.
  2. Weather Conditions: Check the Wisconsin DNR Fire Danger & Burning Restrictions here before burning.
  3. Burn Site Preparation:
    • Create a firebreak around the burn area to prevent the fire from spreading.
    • Keep the area clear of flammable materials such as dry grass, leaves, and debris.
  4. Supervision & Equipment:
    • Never leave the fire unattended.
    • Keep water, shovels, and fire extinguishers nearby in case of emergency.
    • Have a phone ready to call 911 if the fire gets out of control.
  5. Time Restrictions: Burns should be completed before dark unless explicitly approved by the Fire Department.
  6. Smoke Control: Avoid burning when smoke could cause a hazard to roadways or neighbors.
